The coronavirus vaccine is offered to those from the age of 6 months as follows:

  • everyone aged 18 and over receives at least three doses of the vaccine, a contracted disease is counted as one dose of the vaccine.
  • children aged 12–17 receive at least two doses.
  • children aged 6 months to 11 years receive vaccines according to the individual assessment of an attending physician.

Vaccinations are voluntary and free of charge.

Primary vaccination series

The primary series of coronavirus vaccines includes two vaccine doses. The recommended dose interval between the first and second dose is 6–12 weeks.

Booster vaccinations

For children aged five years and over, the third and subsequent vaccine doses are booster doses. Booster doses maintain protection against serious illness and death.

Third dose

THL recommends at least three vaccine doses for all adults and 12–17-year-olds belonging to at-risk groups.

An autumn-winter booster vaccination

We recommend the autumn winter 2023 booster vaccination:

The vaccine is administered in one dose. We recommend the vaccine to the target groups, regardless of how many booster doses the person has previously received or how many times they have contracted the coronavirus.

We recommend that the vaccine be taken in conjunction with influenza vaccinations.

Booster doses for persons with severe immunodeficiency are based on individual assessment

Additional booster doses of coronavirus vaccines may be given to persons with severe immunodeficiency aged 12 or over, based on the treating physician’s individual assessment. The Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL) recommends that the next booster dose is given 6 months after the previous dose at the earliest.

Currently, booster doses are not recommended for persons with severe immunodeficiency aged 6 months to 11 years after completing the primary vaccination series.

You can find more information on the website of the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare: Coronavirus vaccines – THL (in Finnish)

Vaccinations for those who have had COVID-19

Having the disease once is equivalent to one vaccine dose when there is a minimum of 6 weeks between the disease and vaccination. Similarly, having the disease twice is counted as two vaccine doses when there is a minimum of 3 months between the episodes of the disease.
