Residents of the Wellbeing Services County of Ostrobothnia are encouraged to take the coronavirus vaccinations and booster vaccination in accordance with current recommendations.

The COVID-19 vaccine gives protection against coronavirus disease and, in particular, its severe forms. COVID-19 vaccines help to prevent the transmission of the virus although they do not completely eliminate the risk of infection.

The coronavirus vaccine is offered to all residents over the age of 5 in the region. The vaccine is free.

The first, second and third coronavirus vaccinations are currently being given. You can also ask your occupational healthcare provider about giving coronavirus vaccinations.

The first and second vaccine doses

  • You can always receive your first vaccine.
  • You can receive a second coronavirus vaccine 6 weeks after the first vaccine.

Third vaccination dose

You can receive a third coronavirus vaccination if any of the following apply to you:

  • You are over 60-year-old or you belong to THL risk groups 1 and 2 and it has gone 3-4 months from your second coronavirus vaccination.
  • You are over 18-year-old and it has gone 4-6 months from your second coronavirus vaccination.
  • You are 12–17-years-old in a risk group and 6 months have passed since your second vaccination, or a third vaccination is needed for special reasons, such as travel.

More information about vaccinations and vaccination order on the THL website.

Fourth vaccination dose

You can receive a fourth coronavirus vaccination if:

  • You are atleast 18 years of age and belong to risk group 1 or 2. You can receive your fourth vaccination 3 months after the third dose.
  • You are 60 years old and at least 3 months have passed since the third dose of the vaccine.
  • You live in a care home (no 80-years-old age requirement) and at least 3 months have passed since the third dose of the vaccine.
  • You are within the scope of organised home care or family care for seniors as well as if you are a carer.
  • You are aged 12 years and older who have a severely weakened immune defence system. The booster dose can be given 3-4 months after the third dose.

Fifth vaccination dose

You can receive a fifth coronavirus vaccination if:

  • You are aged 12 years and older who have a severely weakened immune defence system. The booster dose can be given 4 – 6 months after the fourth dose.

First vaccine dose

You can receive your first vaccine dose after having had the coronavirus if:

  • You are at least 18 years old and at least 2 months have passed since you had the disease.
  • You are 5-18 years old and at least 4-6 months have passed since you had the disease.

Second vaccine dose

You may receive your second vaccine dose after having had the coronavirus if:

  • You are over 60 years of age or in a risk group, and 3-4 months have passed since you received the first vaccine dose or the disease, whichever happened the most recently.
  • You are 18 years old and 4-6 months have passed since you received the first vaccine dose or the disease, whichever happened the most recently.

Third vaccination dose

You may receive your third vaccine dose after having had the coronavirus if:

  • You are severely immunocompromised and have reached the age of 12. The third dose is recommended 3 to 4 months after the previous vaccine dose or the disease, whichever happened the most recently.

Others do not need a third dose for protection, at least for the time being, if they have had the coronavirus and received two vaccine doses.

Fourth vaccination dose

A person who has already had the coronavirus and received three vaccinations does not need to take a fourth dose at this time.

Depending on the availability of vaccines, BioNTech-Pfizer’s Comirnaty or Modernan Spikevax mRNA coronavirus vaccines will be administered at vaccination clinics. The booster vaccine may be from a different manufacturer than the previous vaccine. However, men under the age of 30 are always given the Phizer vaccine. Children are vaccinated with Comirnaty.

A COVID-19 certificate can be printed from My Kanta.

If it is not possible to print the certificate from My Kanta, please contact the Customer Service Centre on 06 218 9000, from where you will be directed on how to order the certificate.

Coronavirus vaccinations are, in principle, given in a person’s municipality of residence.

If you are staying in one of the municipalities of the Wellbeing Services County of Ostrobothnia because of work, you can ask about the possibility of getting a coronavirus vaccine, first from your own employer or from an occupational healthcare provider. If you are not covered by occupational healthcare and would like to receive a coronavirus vaccination while in our county, please contact the Customer Service Centre, tel. 06 218 9000.

If a young person is unable or unwilling to decide to take a coronavirus vaccination, then the consent of the child’s parents or guardians is required.

All guardians of the child must consent to the administration of the coronavirus vaccination. Fill in the consent form in advance and take it with you to the vaccination visit.

For more information on giving consent:

THL: Guardians’ consent form for giving a vaccination to a young person

Certain adverse reactions may occur after a coronavirus vaccination, but such reactions are usually mild and transient. Adverse reactions usually begin within a few days of vaccination and go away within a few hours or days. Symptoms can be relieved with antipyretics and painkillers.

The most common adverse reaction is pain and redness at the injection site. Swelling and hot flushes may also occur. Other common adverse reactions include fever, muscle aches, headache, tiredness, chills, malaise and irritability. These symptoms are not a barrier to further vaccinations.

Please contact your healthcare provider if you have any questions about the safety or side effects of vaccinations.
