Coronavirus is an infectious disease that is transmitted primarily through droplets from one person to another.

A person infected with coronavirus may be asymptomatic or there may be a variety of symptoms. Symptoms are individual and can range from mild to severe. Mild infections are treated at home, but severe symptoms may require hospital treatment.

The greatest risk of catching a coronavirus infection is in places with large numbers of people. Asymptomatic carriers can also infect other people with the virus.

A coronavirus infection can be asymptomatic or cause a variety of symptoms ranging from mild to severe. The symptoms and their severity are individual and may change as the disease progresses.

The following symptoms may indicate an infection:

  • fever
  • cough
  • headache
  • sore throat, irritated throat
  • muscle aches
  • runny nose and congestion
  • changes in the sense of smell and taste
  • shortness of breath
  • weakness, fatigue
  • diarrhoea
  • nausea, vomiting

Coronavirus cannot be determined by symptoms alone. A coronavirus test is needed to confirm infection.

COVID-19 vaccines are effective in protecting against a serious form of the disease. Vaccinations also prevent the excretion and transmission of the virus, although they do not completely prevent the risk of infections.

Good hand hygiene, the wearing of face masks, and maintaining safe social distancing to other people help protect against the virus. By avoiding congested places and large events, you can reduce the risk of infection.

Exposure to the coronavirus is possible when people encounter each other. The virus can also spread as a contact infection from surfaces, which is why it is important to maintain good hand hygiene.

An infection can be completely asymptomatic, which means that the virus can spread unknowingly. A person can also become infected with the virus even before the actual symptoms begin. The highest risk of infection is in places visited by a lot of people.

Avoid meeting other people and moving around in public if you have symptoms suggestive of the coronavirus or have been exposed to the virus. You should not go to work, school or take part in leisure activities while you are ill.

The COVID-19 passport is a Digital COVID-19 Certificate downloadable from the My Kanta Pages. You can be asked to show a COVID-19 passport, for example, at events, restaurants or when travelling.
