Influenza vaccination appointments for risk groups will open on 23 September
Anyone over 65 can also have a corona booster vaccine at the same time as the flu vaccination. This also applies to anyone over 18 who is in a corona vaccine at-risk group or pregnant.
– It is very important to make sure you receive the protection provided by vaccinations, since the majority of those taking the vaccine avoid catching the flu. And if a vaccinated person does catch the flu, the disease is usually milder and the recovery is faster, emphasises Silvia Grönroos-Pada, Chief Physician of Infectious Diseases.
Protecting yourself with a flu vaccine is especially important for the elderly, pregnant women and small children, who are especially susceptible to the same severe flu symptoms that require hospital treatment.
The protection provided by the flu vaccine lasts for about a year, which means that the vaccine taken last year no longer protects against this season’s flu infection.
Who is given the free flu vaccination?
- pregnant women
- Everyone aged 65 and over
- Children aged 6 months-6 years
- Those belonging to at-risk groups because of an illness or treatment
- Men starting their military service and women starting their voluntary military service
- Persons with an increased risk of contracting avian influenza
In addition, persons caring for clients and patients, as well as social, healthcare and medical care personnel, along with those close to a person susceptible to a serious influenza infection, are entitled to receive a free influenza vaccination.
