Termination of Pregnancy – Support and Information
Considering terminating a pregnancy (abortion), for whatever reason, can be a difficult and emotional process. Before making a decision, you can receive psychosocial support through our maternity and contraception clinics, which can offer conversational support and the opportunity to go through your options in a calm and safe environment.
After the decision – whether the pregnancy is ended or continues – further help is available through our psychosocial centres.
You always have the right to be treated with respect and in a straightforward manner. Healthcare staff may not attempt to influence your decision; they are there to provide information and support.
In Finland, approximately 90% of abortions take place before gestational week 12+0, and 98–99% are carried out using medication. These abortions are largely performed at home in accordance with individual instructions.
A pregnancy may be terminated on personal request up to week 12+0 in Finland, without the need for any special explanation.
After week 12+1, additional authorisation is required. Authorisation can be granted up to week 20+0, and in cases of serious fetal abnormalities up to week 24+0. Our staff will help explain the authorisation process when you get in touch.

Booking an Appointment for an Abortion
Regarding the abortion procedure itself, the Gynaecological Outpatient Clinic at Vaasa Central Hospital and its local reception in Jakobstad are responsible for the care process.
A person wishing to terminate a pregnancy books an appointment directly with the Gynaecological Outpatient Clinic’s ward secretary. The phone number can be found on the contact card below. No referral is needed to book an abortion appointment at the outpatient clinic.
