Obduction, i.e. the storage and autopsies of the deceased, is managed by the Wellbeing Services County of Ostrobothnia. Medical autopsies are performed in our department, whereas forensic autopsies take place at Tampere University Hospital. However, not all deaths require an autopsy.

Our department is connected to a chapel, where family members can come and see the deceased. A final farewell can be arranged when the deceased is laid in the coffin and before he or she is transported to the cemetery. Moreover, a service can be held for the deceased. Please ask your funeral home to manage the chapel’s reservation for such events on your behalf.

The Department of Pathology is on the ground floor of the main building’s C and D Wings. The easiest way to reach us is by arriving to the hospital area from the intersection of Hietalahdenkatu and Rantakatu and by following the signs. There are reserved parking places behind the JK Building for family members visiting the chapel.

Please note that we cannot show the deceased who are waiting for a forensic autopsy before the autopsy is concluded. Ostrobothnia Police Department (029-544 0511) will answer all questions concerning the deceased who are waiting for a forensic autopsy. The pathology department’s obduction assistant will answer questions concerning the deceased who are waiting for a medical autopsy or no autopsy at all. Your funeral home takes care of the burial permit. The funeral can be held before the cause of death is established, provided that the autopsy has been performed.
