Addiction Psychiatric ward
The addiction psychiatric ward is divided into the addiction care and the psychiatric care. The ward has 21 care places in total and offers care around the clock. The treatment at our ward is based on a view of people as equals. Everyone has the right to good care regardless of age, religion, nationality or social status. The treatment time at our ward varies. It is always assessed individually according to the disease and symptoms.
We who are responsible for the patient care are a multi-professional working group.

If necessary, the services of family therapist, physiotherapist, occupational therapist, exercise instructor and hospital pastor are also available if needed. The staff at our ward has a professional secrecy and language skills in both domestic languages. Interpreter services can be used if needed.
The addiction care
The addiction care has 11 care places, which are distributed in that two care places are sobriety places and nine are detoxification and weaning care places. The addiction care treats over 18-year-old adult patients, who the outpatient services are not able to detoxify or wean from drugs. Addiction care is voluntary and bases on an individual care plan.
The addiction care works as a low-threshold activity, no referral is needed. You have to call to number 06 213 2400 and ask if there any available places.
The purpose of care is to put an end to the patient’s long-term abuse. A care plan is drawn up for the patient with regard to her/his physical, mental and social situation. In addition, a need for possible continued care is assessed. If necessary, we collaborate with other actors in social and health care.
Sobriety care
Sobriety care is offered to the patient in the initial stage of care when she/he is intoxicated. The purpose is to ensure that the patient manages safely out of the acute state of intoxication.
Detoxification and weaning care
The purpose of detoxification and weaning is to put an end to an addiction that has been going on for a long time and to alleviate withdrawal symptoms. Acute withdrawal symptoms and complications due to heavy drug use are usually treated with medication. Patients suffering from drug dependence are offered a physician-prescribed downsizing schedule of the drugs.
During the detoxification and weaning treatment, the patients’ acute crisis situations can be sorted out and, together with the patient, a plan drawn up for continued care to support her/his drug freedom. The care is carried out according to the patient’s individual needs.
The psychiatric care
The psychiatric care has 10 care places. The ward cares for patients who require demanding care and who have both mental health issues and / or addiction problems. To come to the psychiatric care for treatment, you need a doctor’s referral. The referral can be written from a health care center, community/emergency room, occupational health care or outpatient psychiatric care.
The treatment on the psychiatric care can be voluntary or involuntary. If the treatment takes place, the patient’s basic rights can be limited. The patient’s fundamental rights may have to be restricted, during treatment, if it is against the patient’s own will. The restrictions are based on the Finnish Mental Health Act and are intended to protect the patient. During the care, a psychiatric evaluation and a multi-professional care plan are drawn up. During the care period, home visits can be made. We co-operate with the home municipality’s outpatient care and strive to arrange family meetings or network meetings. Appropriate aftercare is arranged for the patient before discharge.
The doors of the psychiatric care are closed, which means that access is restricted. Based on the patient’s condition, the patient can obtain a free passage, a permission to move freely within the hospital area. Personal leaves and transactions outside the hospital area are agreed separately.
Medication is one part of psychiatric treatment. The ward doctor assesses the need for medication and takes care of follow-up and medication changes.
Mobile phones and computers
You can use your phone and laptop. However, please consider the privacy of other patients. On the addiction care, there are certain phone times that we want patients to keep.
Money and valuables
The hospital and staff are not responsible for your valuables, money or private clothing, nor for any items left for storage. Avoid bringing unnecessary items with you to the ward.
Safety
Avoid bringing dangerous and sharp items (scissors, needles, knives) and glassware to the ward. For your own and other patients´ safety, these are stored in a locked drawer in your room.
Free passage
The use of free passage is possible according to your well-being and is agreed with the doctor and the nursing staff.
Leaves
Personal leaves are agreed with the doctor and the nursing staff.
Meals
Meals are eaten in the patient dining room of the ward.
