Child Maintenance
A child has the right to adequate maintenance. The child’s parents are liable for the child’s maintenance according to their abilities and until the child reaches the age of 18.
If a parent does not provide for the child in another way or if the child does not reside with him or her, the parent may be ordered to pay child support for the child. In such cases, a maintenance agreement is drawn up between the parents. The Child Supervisor helps the parents to reach an agreement and confirms the agreement. If the parents are unable to reach an agreement, the maintenance agreement is determined by the district court.
If the parent liable for maintenance cannot pay maintenance or has neglected to pay it, child maintenance allowance can be paid to the child. Child maintenance allowance is also paid to the child if paternity has not been established.
The Social Insurance Institution of Finland (Kela) grants and pays child maintenance allowance.
